Pedophilia is Not Just Catholic

Indeed, the pedophile epidemic metastasizes through the clergy of many denominations, not just Catholic priests and lay brothers. Pedophiles gravitate to holy orders, and their malign hypocrisy shocks the conscience. 

In August 2016 a 56 year old “youth pastor” named James Coleman Parkhurst was arrested on charges of producing 163 pornographic images of 5 boys taken in national parks and then mailed to pedophile collectors in 15 states. 

The children were aged 9-12, and were depicted bathing or urinating. Mr. Parkhurst was a United Methodist deacon, and had a long history of serving in youth related ministries.

A church press release announcing his hiring stated, “He enjoys spoiling (two younger male relatives) on annual trips to our national parks in the west.” 

“Prosecutors said Parkhurst admitted to taking nude photos of boys during a 2010 trip to Manitou Springs, Pikes Peak and Estes Park.” The article also states, with no further explanation, “He also took the boys to Germany, Canada, France, Peru, Brazil, Vietnam, Italy, Greece and Sweden and Hawaii.”

Many pedophiles demonstrate an utter inability to control their perversions, and become repeat offenders. In Arkansas in 2009, a Little Rock pastor and “TV financial expert” was arrested after engaging in oral sex with a 15 year old boy that he met online. He confessed to the crime. 

That pastor resigned from the church that he headed, and was subsequently sentenced to six years. 

Apparently after his release, he reoffended and was charged with three counts of sexual assault involving a teenage girl. The excerpts published on Arkansas Online did not publish the name of this pastor, reserving that information for registered subscribers. 

Also in August, 2016, a 58 year old pedophile named Timothy Probert was sentenced to 15-35 years for the sexual abuse of “multiple” male children between the ages of 10-16 between 1986-2010.

The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reported from Princeton that Probert pled guilty to 37 charges related to child sexual abuse that occurred while he was a “youth volunteer” at Westminster Presbyterian Church

One victim addressed the court:

“I am here because Tim Probert systematically and methodically groomed me as a 14 year old boy to feed his twisted, pathetic sexual appetites.”

He continued, “Tim Probert was an elder in my church. He was a family friend.” 

“Over the course of approximately two years I spent about four different nights at Tim Probert’s house. The progression was always the same. First friendship through shooting pool; shared meals; watching movies.” 
“Along the way alcohol was always introduced. Then Tim would provide us with pornography to watch with him. As a 14 year old, pubescent boy with my earliest access to alcohol I masturbated in the presence of Tim Probert.” 
“As a grown man, a trusted citizen of our community, a family friend, an elder of the church of Jesus Christ, Tim Probert masturbated in my presence. Tim Probert asked me if he could masturbate me, which I declined. I was unable to see it at the  time, but have come to believe this was the carefully choreographed work of a seasoned sexual predator.”

The victim concluded, saying that he believed that there was hope for Mr. Probert in Jesus Christ, “It seems to me that you stand the best chance of truly making that hope your own in prison, where your sexual appetites for children will be starved and, by God’s grace, you’ll have a chance to turn to Him instead.”

The victim then broke down, saying, “God have mercy on this court.”

The defense attorney, Mr. William Flanigan, argued that while Probert was on home confinement, he voluntarily submitted to chemical castration injections. 

One of the prosecuting attorneys then reminded the court that “a few months after Probert’s arrest he was brought before the court for soliciting sex from a man who came to his house offering to do yard work.”

In the end, Fayette County Judge Charles Vickers gave Mr. Probert credit for time served while on home confinement, making Mr. Probert eligible for parole in 12 years. 

The pastor of the church where Probert served as a youth volunteer, Westminster Presbyterian Pastor Jonathan Rockness, then was quoted, “Frankly, I believe this sentence is absurd….This is a man that spent his entire adult life abusing young boys, many of whom were the children of family friends, others of whom were assigned to have him as a father-figure because they had already been neglected or abused.” 

“He has pleaded guilty to 37 counts, yet the sentence is equivalent to what would be given to just one count. A serial child-rapist has now been sentenced as if he only violated the law one time. It is mystifying.”

Again in August, 2016, former senior pastor Chad Calhoun, aged 33, was convicted on federal charges of receiving and possessing child porn. 

A former senior pastor at Lake Highlands Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs, The Longview News-Journal reported that Calhoun was sentenced to 135 months in federal prison. Calhoun will be required to register as a sex offender and serve 10 years of supervised release after his incarceration.

The News-Journal reported that evidence at trial revealed that Calhoun was sharing child porn using a peer-to-peer file sharing program from his home and from the premises of the Baptist Church. Investigators testified that they found hundreds of child porn videos on his laptop. 

The article states that the case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office. 

In June 2016 The Oregonian reported that 20 year old Michael Cele Stephens molested a 12-13 year old girl. Again, Stephens was a “youth leader,” this time at First Christian Church of The Dalles.

Sentenced to 15 years in prison for abusing a total of six girls aged 12-15, prosecutors attested that Stephens met the girls through church or 4H Club. Stephens confessed to abusing 10 girls during police interviews, but 4 victims chose not to press charges. Unusually, Stephens was 18 or 19 at the time of the abuse, making him younger than the usual offender. 

This was the second time that a pedophile at First Christian Church was unmasked. In 2013 youth pastor Daniel Charles Chamberlain, aged 31-32, pled guilty to victimizing a 15 year old girl. After Stephens was arrested, lawsuits ensued. 

A lawsuit stated that Stephens exposed his victim to “explicit text messaging, sexually explicit photos / videos, kissing, fondling (her) genitals, oral sodomy and anal sodomy.” 

Also in June 2016 The Seattle Times reported that a Bellevue Christian School teacher was accused of molesting a 13 year old girl. Teacher Edward Sloan, 45, was placed on leave by the private school. 

Drilling into the article, two interesting facts emerge. One, the alleged molestation consisted in this case solely of “inappropriate touching.” 

Secondly, after police called Mr. Sloan and asked him to present himself at the police station, Mr. Sloan lawyered up, he retained an attorney, and he declined to speak with police. He never went to the police station, and police did not arrest him. 

Mr. Sloan was the subject of multiple reports of “improper touching” dating back to 1999. Mr. Sloan was hired in 1997. School officials investigated and a later principal, Ms. Jamie Sipma, “told police the incident was “whitewashed.”

The article explains, a victim “was 12 when Sloan started telling her she was pretty and attractive, and inappropriately touched her numerous times during and after class.”

Again in June 2016, The New York Post reported that James Love, age 46, pastor of New Mount Zion Baptist Church in Bushwick, Brooklyn, was charged with the molestation of a 6 year old girl that his wife was babysitting.

A criminal complaint stated that the sadly misnamed Mr. Love “exposed his genitals to her and placed her hand on his genitals,” and on multiple occasions, “rubbed his genitals against (hers).”

Mr. Love was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment for sexual molestation of a child. 

Yet again in June, 2016, Fox8 and Ms. Deirdre Smith of the Salisbury Post reported from Salisbury, NC that a youth pastor, Benjamin Ross Hollifield, 26, was convicted in Rowan County Superior Court on multiple charges including 7 counts of felony / statutory rape / sex offense, 4 counts of felony indecent liberties with a minor, and 1 count of felony first degree sex exploitation of a minor. His victim was a 13 year old girl. 

A youth pastor at Piedmont Baptist Church in Kannapolis, Hollifield was sentenced by Judge Joseph N. Crosswhite to a minimum of 15 years (180 months) and a maximum of 23 years (276 months) in prison. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender.

Hollifield admitted that he knew that the victim was 13 years old. Rowan County Sheriff’s Office detectives investigated beginning in 2015, learning that Hollifield and his wife were working at the church the first time that he and the female minor kissed. 

Hollifield admitted that he first had sexual intercourse with the young girl at church after choir practice. Mr. Hollifield also shared pornographic photos on his phone with her. 

Then in May 2016, The Capital Journal reported that Joseph Raleigh, 34, a South Dakota Baptist pastor facing multiple state and federal felony charges, agreed to a plea agreement with prosecutors. 

Arrested in Blunt, SD, approximately 20 miles northeast of Pierre, Raleigh agreed online to pay a pimp for sex with a 15 year old girl. Police were behind the whole thing, of course.

Federal prosecutors charged Raleigh with commercial sex trafficking of children, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years, and attempted enticement of a minor using the internet, which carries a mandatory minimum of 5 years supervised probation. 

South Dakota state prosecutors charged him with solicitation of a minor, a class 4 felony with a max of 10 years in prison, and a misdemeanor count of attempting to hire someone for sex.

After spending a month in jail in Pierre, Pastor Raleigh was released to a halfway house while his state and federal cases wound their way through the parallel judicial systems. He resigned from his position at his church, the First Baptist Church, The Capital Journal says, within days of his arrest. The congregation is in Miller, SD. 

Also in May 2016, NBC4 from Los Angeles reported that Jeffrey Adam Tracy, 39, was re-sentenced to more than 10 years in state prison and ordered to register as a sex offender for uploading child porn and molesting a 5 year old autistic male relative. The autistic child was unable to communicate his sexual abuse to others.

Tracy videotaped some of his sex acts with the victim, consisting of oral copulation, and emailed them to other pedophiles. Again, Tracy was a church worship leader.

Again in May 2016, Larry DuRant, 61, pastor of Word International Ministries in Sumter, was found guilty of one count of criminal sexual conduct with a 13 year old minor and sentenced by Judge Roger Young to the maximum sentence of 20 years.

DuRant sexually assaulted a 13 year old female member of his church on multiple occasions. Three other teenage girls ages 13-18 testified that they also were assaulted under the guise of religion, saying that DuRant called it a “healing process” and “private prayer.” 

Finally, in May 2016, Jonathan Cox, Sr., 51, pastor at Greater Refuge Temple of Deliverance in Norristown, was convicted of rape of a child, statutory sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault of a child under the age of 13, endangering the welfare of a child and corruption of minors.

The victim was 12 and 13 years old during several instances of sexual assault, she was assaulted at Cox’s home, in a hotel room, and at the Main Street church where he was the pastor.
